Topic: The rise of non-institutional political parties in Europe

NEWS ON THE NEWROPEANS CLUB OPEN MEETING 25/02/2015
Since the failure of European Constitution Project in 2005 and the Global Systemic Crisis of 2008, new political forces arised in most countries of Europe as traditional political parties failed to represent their citizens.

Aiming to create a common transeuropean political culture from civil society, Newropeans Club wants to identify those new political forces, which are a result of the Crisis, to prepare the basis for  a transeuropean political collaboration.

Two countries were analysed, Germany and Spain, identifying the political background of the country, the political establishment existing before the crisis and the new political movements.

The idea of producing a collaborative mapping of the non-institutional political parties in Eurozone was discussed around two axes, (a) Left or Right and (b) in favor and against a European democracy. Parties to be included need to have any of these two criterias:
  • A quantitative criteria of a minimum of 2% of votes in the last elections.
  • A qualitative criteria of smaller parties willing to participate in a transeuropean initiative.

Being present in the Open Meeting participants from Germany, Spain, France and Portugal, new non-institutional forces were included in the positioning map.

The links between these parties are weak or non-existent. Newropeans Club will assist in identifying those projects which can help to build a transeuropean platform.

During our biannual meeting in Paris, next March 7th, we will continue discussing this issue with more Small and Medium political parties throughout Europe.
