Caution is the byword for Britain’s squeezed families

Output is closing in on the peak level reached six years ago. And with a bounce in the polls for the Conservatives after the Budget, things in George Osborne’s garden are smelling of roses. His post-Budget swagger suggests he thinks it is time for a little complacency.

The chancellor of the exchequer should be more cautious. When the May 2015 general election arrives, a definitively settled fact will be that, while the UK economy is set to be about 8 per cent bigger than in May 2010, the vast majority of families will have lower living standards.
