GMO maize vote highlights 'absurd' EU rules

According to the so-called commitology rules of the EU, some laws can be approved by the commission if there is no qualified majority in the council of ministers rejecting it. In a heated public debate on Tuesday (11 February), 19 states said they would vote against authorizing the genetically modified maize, pointing to health and environmental risks, as well as opposition from the European Parliament.

#fucktheEC - 19 EU states against - 4 abstentions: Germany, Portugal, Belgium and Czech republic - 5 for: UK, Estonia, Sweden, Finland and Spain. No matter how you turn the problem the "qualified" majority, in terms of numbers (though the EC considers that the abstention of the 5 countries counts as a vote in favour) and of population, voted against.
